Hey there dear horrorfiends! James J. Coker here wishing you all a happy Valentines day. If you have that special someone in your life then why not sit down and enjoy some Valentines Day slasher movies together like the My Bloody Valentines movies.
Now I tried to watch another Valentines day slasher movie that came out during the last year of the SCREAM boom to review for this blog on this holiday but i just couldnt like it. alot of Horror fans watch this slasher film on V-day and say they like it but i just couldnt. I am referring to the 2001 slasher film VALENTINE.
I tried to put this one in a “Underrated Horror for Valentines Day” title but as i was watching it last night I just couldnt really defend the film. I found it to be a paint by the numbers Scream clone with unlikable characters and goreless death scenes. But thats just me horrorfiends!
anyways I hope you all have a Good Valentines day and if your single…fuck it still watch the my bloody valentine movies, There alot of fun.
Many horror fans have heard of that “lost horror movie” the old scare film from decades ago that is nowhere to be found and supposedly incredibly gory and incredibly scary. For horror fans it is the ultimate treasure, to find that lost holy grail of a horror film, but what if the concept of a horror fan trying desperately to find that lost horror film was turned into a horror film itself? what if finding that lost horror film ends up going to very dark and dangerous places? enter Dave Parkers incredibly gruesome, mean spirited and well made 2009 straight to video slasher film THE HILLS RUN RED.
from imdb : A group of young horror fans go searching for a film that mysteriously vanished years ago along with the films director, but instead find that the demented killer from the movie (babyface) is real, all of the death scenes from the existing trailer are real and he’s thrilled to meet fans who will die gruesomely for his art.
Now if you are a fan of slasher films in the least of senses then you need to seek this one out NOW! Dave Parker’s the Hills Run Red is one hell of a entertaining and gruesome slasher film. All of the actors do a good job portraying believable characters but the acting spotlight of the film really shines on both William Sadler who plays the elusive film director Wilson Wylder Cancannon and actress Sophie Monk who plays the directors daughter who is helping the young horror fans find the lost slasher film.
Now the main villain of the film “BabyFace” is a damn good slasher villain who should be up there with the likes of Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers. Not only is he a damn creepy and gruesome looking killer but how he dispatches his many many MANY victims in the film is incredibly mean-spirited and gruesome. One such death scene involving a poor girl and hooks and that is all ill give away. But not only is Babyface creepy and very gruesome in his kills but he also surprises not only the characters in the film for what he is capable of but also surprises the viewer too in a very “whoa!” kind of a moment near the end.
Director Dave Parker’s style and tone are front and center in the film. Bright red lighting and red coloring is present through a number of scenes through the film and as soon as our character enter into Babyface’s domain the whole film gets more gruesome and demented with each passing scene, ending in a very bleak and macabre place for our characters. Director Dave Parker provides zero safety for both the viewers and the characters in the film.
You need to seek this one out immediately dear horror fans. The Hills Run Red is one hell of a entertaining, gruesome, mean spirited and just plain fucked up slasher film that you cant pass up – James J. Coker
If any of you can remember the video store days, then you can definitely remember going to blockbuster or hollywood video and going to the horror section and seeing all the horror cover art, some of which looked appealing, others looked generic, one such slasher movie to come out straight to video and in video stores during the last days of the video store was a little backwoods slasher movie called “Carver” directed by the grossly under-appreciated Franklin Guerrero Jr.
Carver concerns 5 twenty somethings camping in the mountain town of Halcyon Ridge, there they discover an old shed containing 16MM snuff films of some obese overall wearing redneck murdering several people in vicious ways, they soon discover that the films are indeed real and the murderous redneck is out to kill them.
Now i know this all might sound very very familiar to the casual horror fan but believe me this backwoods slasher film is quite brutal and very much for gorehounds. The death scenes throughout the film are very gory and cringe inducing. with nails to the forehead, stabbings, hand saws slowing decapitating victims, sledgehammers to the face repeatedly, screw drivers to the forehead, gore gun shot blasts to the face and seriously one of the most cringe inducing and grossest death scene ever….all ill say is it involves a character getting covered in poop and then a pair of pliers is taken to one of his testicles…
Not only are the death scenes incredibly graphic in this one but also the uncomfortable backwoods atmosphere of it all really gets under your skin right from the beginning with a disturbing Blue grass song playing on repeat. Also this movie is filmed on digital video and it shows, now though some might say that look is bad but believe me the digital video look of the film really makes the gory, brutal backwoods nature of the film all the more uncomfortable. OH! and it has a good grim ending to it all. Seriously director Franklin Guerrero Jr. proves his worth with this film and his previous gory demon possession film “8th Plague” it is a damn shame he has not made any other horror films.
So if you want a backwoods slasher that is very brutal, gory and fucked up. Then Carver is right up your alley, just make sure you get the unrated version. – James J. Coker
Summer is practically here horrorfiends! and for many horror fans that means summertime horror films. and what can be more of a summer time horror film then that of the summer camp slasher film, particularly ones from the 1980s. Now i know i covered “The Burning” last summer and since this blog is all about HIDDEN HORRORS i will of course never cover the friday the 13th movies because those are surely not Hidden Horrors, no this time i will be covering another summer camp slasher film that is well loved by horror fans but normal movie goers never heard of it, it is MADMAN!
At a summer camp for youths, cockey pre-teen calls out the name of mass serial killer “Madman Marz”. Suddenly, counselors are being maimed and slaughtered in various ways by the backwoodsman who has returned when his name was called.
Now it may seem “Madman” is your run of the mil 1980s summer camp slasher movie and in a way your right but DAMN is it a fun movie. though many of the characters are not very interesting the kills in the film are pretty damn fun with multiple axe murders, slashings and even a decapitation via car hood. Not only are the death scenes fun but the film oozes with atmosphere as well, the whole film is at night so there is this moody blue tone and chilling windy vibe to everything not to mention a scene with a very creepy dilapitated farm house, one can almost say that Madman is a summercamp slasher movie that can be viewed in October! given its atmosphere. and Finally the killer himself Madman Marz is a good one, this hulking beared mongoloid of a farmer is almost the epitome of the term “mongoloid slasher” among horror fans.
So pop this slasher classic in and see what slasher movie fans have been talking about – James J. Coker
